Roy A. McCormick Memorial Scholarship

Roy McCormick grew up in the small town of Payne, Ohio. He graduated from Heidelberg College with a B.S. in chemistry, physics, and biology. While a student at Heidelberg, Mr. McCormick was captain of the football team. He received his master’s degree from The Ohio State University. His first teaching job, in 1924, was in Put-in-Bay. In the fall of 1926, Mr. McCormick moved to Wellington. While at Wellington he taught chemistry, physics, and general science. He also was in charge of the school observatory. In addition to teaching, Mr. McCormick coached basketball and football, winning conference championships in each sport. In 1945, Mr. McCormick became the principal at Wellington High School and held that position until his death in 1963. The Roy A. McCormick Memorial Scholarship was established by his daughter Maureen McCormick Carkeek. The first McCormick Scholarship was awarded in 2002.
