Ruthann Weigl Memorial Scholarship

Ruthann Weigl was born and raised in Lorain County. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in education from Ashland University in 1965, she dedicated her career to the children of the Wellington schools for 26 of her 32 years of teaching. During this time, she continued her education, earning a master’s degree in education from Ashland in 1994. Her love of education and thirst to teach children lasted throughout her life. Even after her formal retirement, Ruthann enjoyed substitute teaching and treated each class with utmost respect and regard. Toward the end of her life, Ruthann was asked to be a scholarship reviewer for her alma mater—a sign of the respect she had earned throughout the community. Her untimely death inspired a compelling need to create an educational scholarship in her honor. The Ruthann Weigl Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students on the strength of their academic achievements, and a preference is given to students intending to pursue a career in teaching. Students selected to receive the Weigl Scholarship should take seriously the responsibility and privilege a good education provides. It is also hoped that they will follow in Ruthann Weigl’s footsteps, becoming caring, dedicated educators who give back to their students and to their communities.
